Exploring Neuro-Support During ADHD Awareness Month: The Science Behind Lion’s Mane

October marks ADHD Awareness Month, a time to increase understanding of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and the many approaches that may support cognitive and emotional well-being. While no supplement can treat or cure ADHD, growing research has explored natural compounds that may complement healthy brain function—one of which is Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus).

Emerging Evidence
Lion’s Mane is a medicinal mushroom that has attracted scientific attention for its potential effects on cognitive performance, neuroplasticity, and nerve growth factor (NGF) synthesis. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, Mori et al. (2009) observed that adults consuming Lion’s Mane for four weeks demonstrated improvements in cognitive function compared with placebo. More recently, a 2023 randomized trial found that daily supplementation of 1.8 g of Lion’s Mane over 28 days led to faster cognitive response times on Stroop tasks and a trend toward reduced perceived stress, suggesting potential neurocognitive benefits (Vigna et al., 2023). Mechanistic studies further support these findings, showing that extracts of Hericium erinaceus can promote neurite outgrowth and NGF synthesis in cultured neurons—key processes involved in brain cell repair and communication (Nagano et al., 2010). While clinical research directly linking Lion’s Mane to ADHD outcomes remains limited, preclinical models indicate that the mushroom’s neurotrophic effects may enhance working memory and executive function, two cognitive domains frequently implicated in ADHD (Raimondi et al., 2024).

Why This Matters
At Boss B, we focus on providing science-driven, bioavailable formulations designed to support focus, clarity, and emotional balance. Our 7,500 mg high-potency Lion’s Mane supplement was developed with these principles in mind—delivering a dual-extracted formula for enhanced absorption and efficacy. As ADHD awareness grows, conversations around brain health must remain responsible, evidence-informed, and realistic. Lion’s Mane is not a treatment for ADHD; however, its emerging research underscores the importance of holistic, preventive approaches to cognitive support.

Can Lions Mane really help with focus?

Roisin Doyle, MSc (Adolescent Health) for Boss B

ADHD symptoms can be really overwhelming, from brain fog to focus struggles, but could a mushroom be part of the solution? Lion's mane is a functional mushroom, so it's an adaptogen, but what sets it apart today is its ability to support neurogenesis. So essentially the growth of new brain cells.

But why does that matter for ADHD? Significant research is showing that lion's mane can help enhance concentration, memory and mental clarity. A study took place in 2020 that was published in Biomedical Research. It actually showed that Lion's Mane helped improve cognitive performance in adults after just four weeks.

While Lion's Mane is not a replacement for ADHD medication, many people with ADHD are adding it to their routine to help support focus. At Boss B, because it's such a high concentrated dosage of Lion's Mane, it's easy to take, it's designed to help improve brain fog and it has the potential to be very beneficial for people with ADHD.
